Privacy Policy

The short version

The benefit.io eligibility checker collects no personal data. Your answers to the questionnaire are never transmitted to any server — all processing happens locally in your browser and the page forgets them the moment you leave. If you create a dashboard account, your data is stored only in your own browser's local storage and is never sent to us.

1. Who we are

benefit.io is operated by Benefit Technologies Ltd (trading as benefit.io), a company incorporated in England and Wales. Our registered address and data controller contact is:

Benefit Technologies Ltd
contact@thebenefit.io

For any data protection queries, please contact us at info@thebenefit.io.

2. The eligibility checker

When you complete the benefits eligibility questionnaire:

  • Your answers (age, household, employment, income, housing, health) are processed entirely within your own browser.
  • No answers are transmitted to our servers or to any third party.
  • No cookies are set as a result of completing the checker.
  • We do not know who you are, what you answered, or what results you received.
  • Your answers are discarded the moment you close or navigate away from the page.

3. The benefits dashboard (optional)

If you choose to create a dashboard account to track your benefits:

  • Your account data (name, email address, PIN-derived identifier, and tracked benefit records) is stored in your browser's localStorage on your device only.
  • This data is never transmitted to our servers. We have no access to it and no copy of it.
  • If you clear your browser's site data, your dashboard data will be permanently deleted. We cannot recover it.
  • Your PIN is used locally to separate multiple users on the same device. It is not stored in recoverable form and cannot be used to authenticate with any external system.

4. Analytics

We use two privacy-preserving analytics tools:

4a. Plausible Analytics

We use Plausible Analytics, a GDPR-compliant, cookieless analytics tool. Plausible does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, does not track users across sites, and does not build individual profiles. It records only aggregate, anonymised metrics such as page views and referrer sources. No consent banner is required for Plausible under UK GDPR or the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). You can read Plausible's own privacy policy at plausible.io/privacy.

4b. Benefit.io aggregate analytics engine

Our platform records anonymised, aggregate counts in your browser's localStorage — for example, the total number of times a particular benefit has been matched across all users on that device, and aggregate completion funnel statistics. These counts contain no personal information and cannot be linked to any individual. They are used to generate the Government Analytics Dashboard, which shows policymakers aggregate demand patterns without any access to personal data.

5. Cookies

benefit.io does not set any cookies. Plausible Analytics is cookieless by design. No consent banner is therefore required for cookies under PECR.

6. Links to GOV.UK and third-party sites

benefit.io contains links to GOV.UK and other third-party websites (such as Citizens Advice and Turn2us). Once you leave our site, this privacy policy no longer applies. We recommend you review the privacy policies of any site you visit.

7. Your rights under UK GDPR

Because we process no personal data on our servers, most of the rights under UK GDPR (access, rectification, erasure, portability) are exercised directly by you — by clearing your browser's localStorage for this site. However, if you believe we hold personal data about you, you have the right to contact us at info@thebenefit.io to request confirmation and, if applicable, deletion.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

8. Children

benefit.io is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect any data from children.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, particularly if we introduce server-side account storage or additional features. Any material changes will be reflected in an updated "last updated" date at the top of this page.
